Air induction ( PAIR) valve....
      #603013 - 11/03/09 11:00 AM

I eblieve this is what it is called. On my 87 it is on the fender wall/ drivers side. Has some vacuum hoses hooked to it. Questions is...this thing makes a loud knocking noise and spits water out of what looks like a little rubber weep hole. Don't remember it making noise before.
Any ideas as to why it would make a knocking noise...is it an air pump for the CAT...and why would water spit out of the little rubber hole. My 95 did not have one?

I just replaced mine after 21 years. It was completely rotted and basically missing. It wouldnt pass a visual inspection to get a smog check. I think it provides O2 to the cat to light the cat and burn hydrocarbons. I know everyone has the same problems with these PAIR valves rotting out. They basically rust from all moisture in the exhaust system and then make some exhaust noise in the engine compartment.

mine is rustd out from the isnside as well, but there is no cat on my pathfnder, also an 87, so is this still important to replace or is it really just useless for me?

You really only need it if you need to pass emissions in your area. Otherwise, you can simply plug the tubes and remove the remains.

I'm In FL so I trashed all of that crap with my first pathy. This one started to rot where it goes into the cat...I patched it up though. I'm sure once the rot is bad enough I'll just chop it all of like the last one I had and replace the cat with a muffler.

...yah...I may remove the AIV....I do have emissions here in Phoenix but...I register it to my parents house in Havasu to avoid the pain of testing. The TBI's tend to fail emissions ALOT.
