Do you have drum brakes or disc? I have replaced seals and bearings on the drum brake H233B under a 95 Pathy before. It is some work, but it is doable. The first time I did it was in camp in Moab a few years back. The bearings are pressed onto the axle shaft and have to be removed to replace the seals, but they are not tightly pressed, they actually use a big nut to keep them in place.

I have the drums and when mine was leaking and I went to change it I couldn't get the bearing off at all. I had to take it to a shop and have them press it off and the new one on. I followed Mr Reverse's instructions but I just couldn't get the damn thing off.

I'd replace both the leaking oil seal and the grease seal, and be careful reassembling it so you don't damage the oil seal.

I wonder what the difference is between the disc or drums?

I did my '92 right rear (drum) about 15 years ago and again a few years later.
My recollection is that it was straightforward, fairly quick and required no special tools.

The difference between the disc and drum brake axles is in the bearings. The drums have a single bearing and the disc have a double bearing setup. I have not taken apart the disc one so don't know what is involved there.

so apparently it might not be the seals but the bearing seals instead, so any suggestions?

If its leaking oil your grease seals(bearing seals or outer seals) will not keep it in. I don't belive in changing the grease seals unless they can't hold fresh grease in plus they are a pain because the bearing has to come off... The inner seal holds the oil in and keeps it from getting to the bearings and diluting the bearing grease.
IMHO just pulling the axles and doning the innner seals yourself and using a needle to inject fresh grease into the bearings before you re-assemble will be your most cost-effective option and your grease seal will continue to do its job so long as you use a normal thick bearing grease.
