Screwy Idle
      #588763 - 10/07/08 01:40 PM

Hey all,

My 2000 XE 4x4 doesn't get much action during the summer months. Probably 1 or 2 short runs/month. I've been getting her ready for the winter (oil, filter, undercoat, cleaning etc) but have noticed the idle is going all over the place. Anywhere from 2000 RPM down to the "normal" idle I'm used to. I've also noticed that sometimes when I start off from a stop, the RPMS drop for a second and then kick in.

Any idea what's going on here? I'll probably have to bring it in to a shop as my mechanical skills are sub-par at best, but would like to be as informed as possible.

Thanks in advance for any insight!

check all the vacuum lines so see if any are rotted, or broke. sorta sounds liek it might be a vacuum leak.

When I had this problem it wasn't the simple stuff. In short, I had a piece of rubber from the gasket between the air filter box and throttle body get stuck in my idle air control valve's plunger. I had to take the IACV off the throtlle body to find it.

This piece of rubber, the size of the opening of a ground on a 120v outless caused my idle to stay from 1700 to 2000 rpm. Plus running without the air filter box you could hear a horrible hissing sound.

Thanks for the input. Checked out all the hoses I could see and no issues from what I could tell. Decided to put some fresh gas and take a run to the camp to see how she behaved. Got 75 KM back a woods road and the "service engine soon" light came on....

Brought it to the garage this morning and it showed a couple of codes (TPS & another I believe was some sort of transmission sensor). The mechanic re-set the codes, went for a spin and didn't have any issues at all. He thinks there may have been a glitch in the system where the truck was sitting pretty much all summer.

Keeping my fingers crossed that the codes don't pop up again!

Thanks all for the input.
