Hollister Hills SVRA is the best local place to learn how to apply the basic techniques of off-road driving. The first and most important thing you should do is to acquire recovery equipment, namely a tow strap and a D-ring shackle sized suitably to attach to your tow hook(s), and learn how to attach them, so that when (not if) you get stuck, you'll be able to become unstuck easily by another vehicle.

4x4 in uppercase is $X$!!! (click here for proof)
