I have a 2000 crew cab SE 4x4 and it's instrument cluster is acting up!! The thing totally shuts off at random, usually on the highway and usually after running for about 30 min or so. It is starting to get annoying. Plus, I am gonna get a speeding ticket! After a while it will throw the speed sensor code and the check engine light will stay on. I doubt it is the speed sensor though as I don't think that would make the entire instrument cluster stop working. The tach, everything doesn't work. Odometer goes blank. I did a search, but didn't find much good info about fixes for this. Any ideas?

I wonder, can you take out the cluster without removing the steering wheel?

Yes, tight fit but can be done. Take the plastic cover off from around the wheel. Unplug the wires. On older Nissans there used to be a replacable capacitor on the back that would go out. I dont see one on a cluster I have unless it is under the back cover. Never had to replace any of mine except a older HB years ago.

Yes i took mine total out doing the clutch return spring. Found out two 12mm bolts holding it in have no nuts on top just loosen em up easy as pie. I took the whole dash out pretty much to beable to see in there. Cover on steering comes off think five screws, four on knee bolster cover, unclip where security light flashes, outer cover on spedo area four bolts, another four holding cluster in place. Its a tight fit tilt the cluster at slight angle undo first clip then the second, the wires are still attached with plastic thingy mine came off. Not hard at all to do, take your time not to scratch anything. You may find once you reclip the cluster wires back in everything works good again?

i already uninstalled and cleaned everything. no change.
im not sure what part of the cluster is bad.
in a previous post i claimed it was my speedo sensor. pretty sure im wrong though

I have found that the dash only goes out after driving for 20 min or more. Driving around town on short trips it works fine. But on any kind of long trip, it will go out. It is very strange. Will tear my dash apart as soon as I can get some time.

I still haven't had time to take the thing apart. I am debating just saying f@#$ it and taking it to the Nissan dealer. But I know they will bend me over a barrel. But maybe there is a recall? I can hope.

Well I fixed this problem. Ok I didn't fix it myself, but I sent my instrument cluster to these guys:
http://www.carradio.com/
They seem to have fixed it. Drove for over 3 hrs yesterday and it didn't malfunction at all. It cost me $275 which seems to be the going rate if you look around on the web. Kinda spendy, but really your only option. I am surprised that the instrument control unit is no longer available from Nissan. Seems strange for a 2000 model to already have parts that are not available. Anyhow it is fixed now.

i know this is an old thread but i need help. i have a 98 frontier (you know 2.4 4 cyl, 5 spd man, 4wd.....). my temp gauge and fuel gauge are both spiked way high, my speedo wont pass 25 mph (even when i know i'm over 70), my tach bounces off of 1000 rpm, and my odometer reads 999999, once in a great while all will work fine, but once i turn the truck off then back on, it's back to nothing. any suggestions

I think I remember calling Courtesy a year ago and the parts weren't available anymore. Anyhow my fix from Southern Electronics worked for a year. It has now started acting up again, so I took out my instrument cluster and sent it off again for a repair, this time under warranty (they off a year warranty). I sure hope it gets fixed for good this time. Super annoying. I thought I would be able to drive my truck around just fine in the meantime w/o th instruments. This is not the case. The charging circuit runs right through the cluster. I might be able to jumper it to make it work but am not 100% sure I won't fry something. Bigtime inconvenience. Oh well there aren't a whole lot of options. I recommend sending yours off to get fixed. There are alot of places around the web that do it.

I still have the brand new one in the box. Email me at andyz240@hotmail.com if interested.
It's specifically for a 2001 Xterra, but do some checking to see if it cross references

I talked with a guy from Felton Auto parts (a wrecker in WA (snohomish) that only deals in Nissans). He said that ALL 1998-2000 Frontiers have this problem. There are no new ones available and the only thing to do is to send yours in! Ha! What a load of crap. This should be a recall. Anybody else think so?

even though I fixed mine with replacement transistors from www.mouser.com
it was earlier this year and courtesty parts still had new ones available for about 160, and they said they would program them.
and sorry mate, a gauge cluster taking a crap 10 years after release isnt a recall. it's simply crap Asian electronics that dont last.

True, probably not a valid recall thing. Pretty crappy that they quit after only 10 years. Electronics in my zx are still going strong 30 years later. Anyhow I think I fixed the charging problem that will result when you try and drive around w/o the instrument cluster in. The "L" lead of the alternator goes through the cluster as it is connected to the "batt" light. Well the circuit goes from the ignition switch through pin #17 on the left plug and then through the batt light and out through the #43 pin on the right plug. It is detailed well in the factory service manual. Anyhow putting a jumper btw those two pins (17 and 43) seems to have fixed the problem. Now I can drive the truck around at night! I have no idea when I will get the instrument cluster back.
Alex, you ever do a writeup on which transistors you replaced? Would be great info to have on the boards!

sure thing here's the write up.
FYI if your not good at small soldering then be very careful as you could ruin the board.
Quote:
OK...
in the event you have a Gauge cluster that has random bouncing needles and a blinking or screwy odometer then this repair could get you squared up.
First remove the cluster
See any service manual for the how to.
once you get the cluster on a work bench you'll need to unassemble the housing (clear plastic front from white plastic back with circuit board ) you'll need to remove the 4 screws that hold the Speedometer in place. then through the top of the cluster there is a small trap door with two clips. pop that off and unclip the circuit board from the speedometer ( be careful the fiber pin set is thin).
after that remove two screws from the back of the speedometer pot then un solder the speedometer from the board via 4 pins.
here is the speedometer pot with 4 pins

here is the back of the speedometer board with the pin holes to unsolder marked and the two screws circled

Now you will be able to see your problem

the two transistors on the board seen by the arrow need replaced. you will need to unsolder the 6 pins and unistall these transistors.
here are the transistors next to the board. finding a replacement wont be too terrible but i couldnt find a direct replacement so i had to find a suitable substitute.
Factory transistors are NPN transistors and the markings will sho the specs.
However I went with a NTE transister with the same specs.
here you can see the new transistor
these need to be installed with the letters facing to the right when looking at the face head on.
once these transistors are installed you can re install the speedometer and reverse the rest of the processs and you should be good to go.
this is at least a $250 savings(parts alone) pending which direction you would have gone about replacing the entire cluster for no good reason.
I used http://www.mouser.com if your transistors look like mine then you need a NTE152 transistor
enjoy and good luck

That's pretty sweet! Thanks. I imagine that the guys I sent my cluster into are doing that right now. At least this time it is a warranty job!
